DUBiT | Sustainable construction and renovation (under review)

The research center DUBiT bundles and reinforces the research activities in the three professional bachelor programs Construction, Real Estate and Electromechanics (campus Aalst).

The research center covers the theoretical and practical aspects of sustainable construction, renovation and life extension within its three core tasks: research, services and training.

Mission: To make sustainable building technology applicable for contractors.

Vision: As the DUBiT research centre, we make a contribution to improving the sustainability of the built environment on the basis of innovative and application-oriented research that is recognised in the field. The environmental impact (LCA) and the cost (LCC) within the entire life cycle are the guiding principles for the development of application-oriented solutions related to the building envelope.

Strategy:

  • Application-oriented research with translation of existing fundamental and academic research into the construction world and the professional field
  • Development of practical guides and freely available tools that can be used directly in the work field
  • Consolidation of results in the form of the development of practical training courses, demonstrations and workshops (the deliverables originate from research projects) offered to the professional field
  • Dissemination of results in the form of advice and services to the field

The research centre covers the theoretical and practical aspects of sustainable construction, renovation and life extension in its three core tasks of research, service and training.

  • Energy-rational and sustainable construction: a building - even if it is a commercial or industrial building - must meet modern (and future-oriented) standards on energy management, use of materials and space, ergonomics, ...
  • Condition assessment of existing structures using state-of-the-art destructive and non-destructive measurement techniques
  • Sustainable renovation, restoration and rehabilitation of existing structures
  • The construction team: coordination and cooperation between the various partners in the construction project

Umbrella sector organisations and certification bodies, academic partners, consulting firms and architects, trade unions and building owners, suppliers and contractors.
