Eye Care

The study programme of Eye Care will train you to become either an optometrist or an orthoptist, both specialist of the visual system.

Do you like helping people and do you have a particular interest in the visual system? Then read on! The bachelor programme of Eye Care at Odisee, University of Applied Sciences is a unique programme in Flanders, and as such the only place to study optometry or orthoptics.

Long traineeship (20 ECTS)

The course component can consist of a tailor-made traineeship or a scientific project. A combination of both (traineeship and project) can be considered as a possibility but needs to be agreed upon in advance.

  • Tailor-made traineeship (20 ECTS)

    The traineeship is aimed at acquiring laboratory skills in orthoptics, optometric skills, visual training, low vision skills and contact lens fitting skills.

    The traineeship can take place at several locations: optician shops including optometry, optometry practices, contact lens practices, low vision practices, ophthalmological practices, hospitals or the Odisee Campus Terranova in Brussels.

  • Superdiversity and healthcare (3 ECTS)*

    The future role of healthcare professionals is evolving rapidly. They must work in an increasingly interdisciplinary manner, utilizing their knowledge and skills to manage both themselves and their practice to act ethically and sustainably in a complex context. Insights into diversity-sensitive care, climate issues, and the ever-growing digitalization are essential. This blended module introduces you to this broader scope.

    The learning path includes an online live introductory lecture, an e-course and a debate you are physically present at, developing a task with other students. The e-course is an individual process that students must complete within a specified time frame and covers the following topics:

    • Advanced working life skills
    • Ethical reasoning, responsible research, and science communication
    • Future insights: Green Deal, superdiversity, and digitalization

  • BIP: European Citizenship and Healthcare (3 ECTS)*

    Blended Intensive Programme: European citizenship and Healthcare – (3 ECTS) Online component: Fall semester – physical week in Brussels: Spring semester*

    This Blended Intensive programme aims to guide students in developing a deep understanding of their professional identity by familiarizing them with both their own and other reference frameworks within Europe. Students will learn the meaning of European citizenship and how to apply this knowledge in a super-diverse context. Additionally, students will develop skills to collaborate constructively and appreciatively in super-diverse groups, focusing on addressing transnational challenges in various domains of healthcare. Through critical reflection on their own reference frameworks, values, and actions, students will be able to operate effectively and ethically in a diverse and dynamic professional environment.

    The programme includes an online preparatory component consisting of an online live lesson, an e-course module titled "Future Insights in Healthcare" to be completed, and an assignment that students must bring to the physical week in Brussels. During this week, they will interact with professionals, stakeholders, target groups, and students from other European countries. It will be an interdisciplinary, experiential, and community-based learning process. An evaluation will follow afterwards.

Credits

  • Number of European credits: 3 - 26 ECTS. With a maximum of 20 ECTS for the traineeship.
  • The traineeship is open for students in Optometry and is in Dutch or French (some possibilities in German or English).
  • The course component requires travelling to different locations in the Dutch, French and/or German communities of the country. 
  • Spring semester.

The traineeship is managed from the Terranova Campus in Brussels.

Insurance

As a registered student, you are insured for the study-related activities at Odisee, with the civil liability policy and with the collective insurance for accidents, after intervention of the health insurance company.
